Climbers at Mosaic Boulders during a team challenge

The Mosaic Cup

Berkeley's team climbing challenge.

Build a team. Climb the weekly Cup Boulders. Compete with clubs, labs, residence halls, fraternities, sororities, and friend groups.

Simple on purpose

Four weeks. Small teams. Nine Cup Boulders each week.

The Mosaic Cup is designed to be easy to understand and fun to join. It is about climbing together, friendly competition, and a fair format that works for teams with different experience levels.

Team size

3–6 climbers

Bring a club, lab, house, fraternity, sorority, or friend group.

Weekly challenge

9 Cup Boulders

Three Beginner, three Intermediate, and three Advanced Cup Boulders.

Scoring

1 point per send

Earn 1 point for each Cup Boulder you send at your ability level or above, up to 4 points per week.

How it works

Climb for your team.

01

Build a team.

Choose 3–6 climbers and pick a team name. Teams can be official student groups or just friends who want to climb together.

02

Climb the Cup Boulders.

Each week Mosaic marks 9 Cup Boulders: 3 Beginner, 3 Intermediate, and 3 Advanced. Come in anytime that week and try as many as you can.

03

Win the Cup.

Scores update weekly. Team score is the average points per registered climber, so larger teams do not get an automatic advantage.

Who can compete?

Any Berkeley group can enter.

Clubs, fraternities, sororities, residence halls, co-ops, research labs, graduate groups, student teams, and friend groups are all welcome.

You do not need to be an experienced climber. Cup Boulders are set for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced climbers, and every teammate can contribute.

Recognition

Two ways to win.

The Mosaic Cup rewards the highest average team score. The Team Send Award recognizes the team with the most total Cup Boulders sent during the season.

Champion

Mosaic Cup

Awarded to the team with the highest average points per registered climber after four weeks.

Participation

Team Send Award

Awarded to the team with the most total Cup Boulders sent during the season.

Fair format

Average scoring

Larger teams do not get an automatic advantage, and teams with more beginners are still competitive because climbers score at their ability level or above.

FAQ

Simple rules.

How many people are on a team?

Teams have 3–6 climbers. That keeps teams small enough that every member matters, but flexible enough for friends, labs, clubs, and houses to enter.

Do we have to be an official UC Berkeley organization?

No. Official student groups are welcome, but friend groups, lab groups, roommates, co-ops, and informal teams can compete too.

Do beginners have a chance?

Yes. Each climber chooses a starting ability level when registering: Beginner (White & Yellow), Intermediate (Red & Blue), or Advanced (Purple & Black). Climbers earn points for sends at their level or above, so teams with newer climbers can still compete.

How are points scored?

Earn 1 point for each Cup Boulder you send at your ability level or above, up to 4 points per week. Team score is total points divided by registered climbers.

What ability level should I choose?

Choose the color range you normally climb: Beginner (White & Yellow), Intermediate (Red & Blue), or Advanced (Purple & Black). Mosaic may adjust obvious mismatches to keep the competition fair.

Do we need to climb at the same time?

No. Teams can climb together or separately during the week, but climbing together is more fun.
